Spina bifida belongs to a group of disorders known as neural tube defects NTDs. These all involve problems in the development and closure of the neural tube, a structure in the human fetus that begins forming very early in a pregnancy. The neural tube eventually becomes the spinal column.
The nature and pattern of the symptoms and physical signs of neurological disease allow inferences to be drawn about the sites of the lesions causing them. One symptom indicating muscular disease is weakness, usually symmetrical that is, affecting both sides of the body and mainly affecting the proximal or girdle muscles. This type of weakness may be noticed when climbing stairs, arising from a deep chair, brushing the hair, or lifting an object.
October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month. Spina Bifida is one of the most common birth defects. According to the March of Dimes, it affects 1 in 2, babies in the United States.

The chromosomal disorders are individually rare, but collectively they are common whereas the multifactorial disorders are the most common form of genetic disorders. The chromosomal anomalies typically arise from alterations in the DNA containing chromosomal regions and can be reliably detected by karyotype analysis, whereas the multifactorial disorders demonstrate multi-gene as well as environmental interactions. Both the chromosomal and multifactorial disorders may manifest signs and symptoms such as a combination of birth defects, physical disabilities, challenging behavior and certain craniofacial defects as well, the knowledge of which can aid in a better patient management in everyday practice of dentistry.
Folic acid supplements at levels consumed by breast cancer patients and survivors in North America promoted the growth of existing breast cancer in rats, new research found. The role of folate, a B vitamin, and its synthetic form, folic acid, in the development and progression of breast cancer is highly controversial.
